The famous German Ensemble Modern comes to Johannesburg on May 15, when the Artists-in-Berlin Programme of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) hosts a concert at the Linder Auditorium at the University of the Witwatersrand.
Pro Helvetia Cape Town supports the presence of prize-winning composer Oscar Bianchi at this event. Bianchi, a dual Swiss-Italian national who is US-based, was a guest of the Artists-in-Berlin Programme in 2009. His composition Vishuddha Concert was commissioned by Ensemble Modern and premiered in Frankfurt last year. The performance at Wits is only the second of this composition.
Winner of the 2005 Gaudeamus prize, Bianchi is quickly becoming recognised by critics, fellow musicians, and audiences as one of the most idiomatic and dynamic composers of his generation. His music, which is characterized by dense textures, vivid imagination, and dramatic tension, has already been played to critical acclaim by major ensembles, including, among others, Klangforum Wien, ICTUS, Les Percussions de Strasbourg, and Ensemble Modern.
Other composers featured in the concert are Lucia Ronchetti and Heiner Goebbels.
Ensemble Modern is one of the world’s leading ensembles of contemporary music, currently comprised of 19 soloists. The Ensemble Modern is famous for its special working and organizational form. Its unique programme consists of music theater, dance and video projects, chamber music, ensemble and orchestral concerts.
